Campaign Update
Great Expectations Tops $400 Million

Great Expectations
n the last four weeks of the fiscal year, Great Expectations gifts flowed in at a record pace, hitting $405,197,930, and keeping the campaign on track to reach its $1 billion goal by 2011. Recent gifts benefit a wide variety of objectives, including an endowed chair that will help to create the Center for Health Literacy for the soon-to-be launched School of Public Health; an endowed chair and student and programmatic support for Persian Studies; endowed professorships in Education and in the College of Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences; scholarships in music and a performance fund; the University Libraries; enhanced landscaping around the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and the Robert H. Smith School of Business; and the renovation and new construction of athletics facilities. Gifts from three faculty members represented $2.25 million of the total funds raised in June.

These outstanding gifts and many others benefit the campaign’s core priorities of student support, faculty development, improved facilities and development of innovative programs across the university.

The Board of Trustees, the Campaign Council and the National Volunteer Council of regional committees, and school and college boards are finalizing plans to build on this momentum for a record-setting year ahead. The continued support of alumni and friends will assure our great expectations and propel the University of Maryland to a position of national and international preeminence.

Onward to the next $600 million!

Recent major gifts are making a big impact.
