Campaign Update
Recent major gifts are making a big impact.
Benefactor Robert H. Smith ’50 has committed another $6 million to the university in support of the Robert H. Smith School of Business’ $12 million plan to catapult the Business Doctoral Program to a leadership position. The goal is to elevate the Ph.D. program to new heights, whereby its graduates will join the faculties at the world’s best business schools and hold high-level positions in industry, research organizations and government.
Carolyn Ahrens, a retired D.C. public school teacher, has provided for two generous endowed scholarships in her will. Ahrens’ gift will create equal scholarship funds in the College of Education and the Merrill College of Journalism. Her late husband Howard worked for the railroads, which was a significant factor in their ability to save and accumulate the funds that will make this gift possible.
J. Logan Schutz ’38, M.S. ’40, committed $100,000 to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for unrestricted use for facility construction and renovation. This will allow the director of athletics to use the gift to benefit all of the 27 teams, helping to provide championship-level facilities for the more than 700 varsity student athletes who represent the Terrapins. The head women's basketball coach's office will be dedicated in recognition of Schutz's generous commitment to the Athletics Renovation Fund.
With a bequest intention for nearly $890,000, Ralph M. Hamaker ’53 has established the Ralph Hamaker Scholarship for Diamondback journalists. Recipients of the Hamaker Scholarships will be students in the Merrill College of Journalism who are on the Diamondback staff.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation continued its extraordinary support of the Merrill College of Journalism with a new pledge of $1.52 million for the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism.
