Greeks Capture Top Spots on Moxley Pillars
hen it comes to supporting the Samuel
Riggs IV Alumni Center Pillars Campaign, members of Alpha
Tau Omega Fraternity and Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority both found a double incentive.
For Alpha Tau Omega, not only are they helping to sustain the new alumni home, but also to further the dream of ATO member Samuel
Riggs IV who was instrumental in making the center a reality. The Pillars Campaign aims to create an endowment to ensure that the Riggs Center maintains its beauty and function long into the future.
"We were very proud to take on this campaign to honor Sam's vision," says Herb
Stutts '52, M.A. '57. "This facility is a wonderful addition to the university,
and it was very much needed for many years." Stutts joined with another ATO alumnus, Gordon Keys Jr. '60 and friend Casey Hernandez, each pledging $5,000 to jump start funding the pillar. Also, their gifts would gain support from chapter alumni for a portrait of Riggs to hang prominently in the alumni center. An unveiling ceremony is set for June 7.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Theta Nu Chapter, the first traditionally African
American sorority organized at Maryland, wants to add another first to its list
of attributesthe first Pan Hellenic sorority to claim a pillar. Their fund-raising
effort, co-chaired by Singleton McAllister '75, and Jatrice Martel Gaiter '75,
is nearing its goal for the pillar with the help of G. Lynn Saffold Davis '83
who made a $5,000 leadership gift.
Davis gave an additional $5,000 to advance the AKA alumni's larger goal of $100,000
to fund a scholarship for the University
of Maryland Incentive Awards, which supports full four-year awards to financially
needy students from Baltimore City and Prince George's County. "Throughout our
lives, people have invested in our potential and our futures," says McAllister. "This
is an opportunity for us to extend that generosity and support by investing in
the lives of young people who have the talent, ambition and drive to succeed."
The named pillars will become a touchstone for each fraternity and sorority,
honoring its vital role in the university's success. Forty-four
organizations have already signed on for one of the 64 available spaces. Alumni and friends
who pledge $1,000 to $5,000 towards this campaign by June 30, 2007, will also
receive various personal incentives ranging from membership in the Colonnade
Society to having your name engraved on the Alumni Wall of Honor. You can double
the value of your gift by asking your (or your spouse's) employer to match it,
and putting those corporate dollars to work for Maryland.
