Supporting Innovation in Real Estate Development
 |
ohn Colvin ’69, a commercial developer, and his wife Karen have given generously to enhance the future of graduate programs in real estate development at Maryland.
Inspired by his mother and role model, the Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development covers the principles of urban planning and design, construction management, finance and investment, land-use and environmental regulation, and asset and property management with an emphasis on smart growth, sustainable design and affordable housing.
The Colvins’ gift of $3 million provides funds for student projects, study tours, applied research and visiting professionals who explore issues facing the industry, such as whether mixed-income communities can thrive and strategies for public-private partnerships.
As part of the School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, the Colvin Institute benefits from its location. Colvin notes that it is an unparalleled laboratory for the study of real estate development with proximity to the historic preservation of Annapolis, the redevelopment of post-industrial Baltimore, environmental concerns for the Chesapeake Bay and modern, multi-use developments in the Washington, D.C., area.
“It is my privilege to give back to my alma mater and my chosen profession,” says Colvin.
